what is the church really about?

by Rev. Grant Gunnink on 08/25/10

The question has been on my mind quite a bit lately - "what is the church really about?" It might sound a bit silly for a pastor to be asking that question, after all, if I didn't know the answer, what am I doing leading a church!? But the question came up because I find that the church, like all of us in our everyday lives, is faced with a myriad of  'good' things it can become quite busy with, and in the process of doing all these good things - it can lose sight of the mission and calling that Christ gave to it.  After all, the church is the body of Christ, and as his body we are supposed to continue on the work He started - proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God, forgiving sins, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, binding up the broken hearted, casting out demons and resisting the devil. (Luke 4:18,  Luke 10:8-20)  So my original question prompted some other questions, like... When was the last time you were at a church function where these things were on the agenda?  and... Have you ever been the recipient of the church doing such work in your life?   You can tell me about it if you feel like it, and I pray that Christ will help us to stick to the mission which He gave us, in spite of all the good things that we can get busy with - in our lives and in our church.

"and this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimoney to all nations and then the end will come" Jesus, ( Matt 24:14)
